Our story
IndoRelief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that started in January 2014 and is operated by a small team of volunteers in San Francisco, California and Faridabad, India. We met in December 2013 in Faridabad, as part of a volunteering program to provide medical aid and health education to people living in underserved areas. We saw the lack of financial resources, infrastructure, and political effort and decided to start our own project.
We saw the need to listen to the voices of the people living in the slums and help provide the aid they asked for. We work closely with locals to provide long term medical solutions, infrastructure, and education programs. Our team in Faridabad is dedicated to learning more about the communities we serve and implementing our initiatives. Our team in San Francisco works tirelessly to connect donors from all over the world to patients who cannot afford the procedures they need. All of us collaborate and exchange ideas daily.
At present 104 people from 9 countries have sponsored healthcare and social welfare projects for 608 patients. IndoRelief is committed to being radically transparent. You can read our transparency pledge to learn more.
Our main operations are:
- HEALTH CAMPS AND HOSPITAL PARTNERSHIPS
We work closely with locals to learn about the needs of the different communities. We work with them to design and implement a health camp that will benefit their community and provide what they want. During these camps, we often meet patients who require additional medical care. With the partnerships we have formed with local hospitals and medical centers, we arrange for these patients to receive the treatment they need.
Our hospital partners also meet many patients who cannot afford lab tests, x-ray imaging studies, medication, or surgery. They refer these patients to our office in Faridabad. After meeting them, we connect our donors to them and help fund their treatment.
- MENTAL PEACE CLINIC
One of the most common complaints we heard from patients is depression and anxiety. Because of the stigma of mental illness in India, most people do not admit that they need help. Concerned about this, the IndoRelief team leased a floor of a convalescent home and opened the Mental Peace Clinic.
We work with local psychologists and other trained mental health professionals to provide counseling and therapy to any patient who asks for help. We hold events in India to raise awareness about mental health.
- NIGHT SHELTER
Winter season (December - February) and monsoon season (June - September) are incredibly difficult for the homeless in India. To help provide a more stable home during this 6 months, we leased a local warehouse and transformed it into a homeless shelter we call "Night Shelter". Meals, bedding, and healthcare are provided to every resident.
We have partnered with local businesses, so that residents of the Night Shelter can find job opportunities during their stay. We do our best to follow up with our residents once they leave the Night Shelter to ensure they receive any care they ask for.
- NEW BEGINNINGS CLINIC
While visiting with one of our patients in the hospital, he told us of his life as child laborer. After speaking with Shankar, we learned of the enormous number of children working illegally at construction sites, clothing factories, and in households in India. Most of these children are either orphans or have been sent to work in order to provide for their families.
Inspired by our conversation with Shankar, we spoke with our donors and our team decided to open the New Beginnings Clinic, an orphanage for former child laborers. Currently we have 7 boys living here. They were successfully removed from their places of work. They receive housing, education, and healthcare.
